Drydocks World launched a Solar-Powered lighting system

Drydocks World the leading provider of maritime and offshore services to the shipping, oil, gas and energy sectors has launched solar LED lighting in the Dubai yard as part of our commitment to environmental conservation and maintaining sustainable business practices. The solar LED lighting builds on our comprehensive environmental initiatives aimed towards zero HSE harm and meets our power demands through renewable sources. In line with the environmental initiatives
“Green Economy For Sustainable Development” put forth by the wise leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, Drydocks World launched solar energy as part of the second Dubai Green Week, contributing to the UAE’s renewable energy programs. The 17th WETEX 2015 is taking place under the theme “At the Forefront of Sustainability” with Drydocks World showcasing a wide-ranging portfolio of innovative and environment-friendly initiatives.

Drydocks World is a pioneer in implementing sustainable green technologies in our facilities and is a leader in promoting environmental excellence in maritime development. As part of Drydocks World’s sustainable objectives, solar LED street lights have been installed with plans to expand all of the yards 70 street lights to solar LED power; this will incur significant energy cost savings of nearly 1 million AED after 20 years of operation. Further feasibility and engineering studies are being conducted on solar power energy for office lighting and throughout the Dubai yard to improve our eco-friendly practices.

Drydocks World embodies the theme “At the Forefront of Sustainability” through the organizations united pursuit of a sustainable future that forges environmental initiatives to accelerate the transition towards a green economy. Drydocks World has initiated a culture of HSE through the ‘Zero Harm’ initiative which advocates zero health, safety and environmental harm, to preserve our workforce and the environment.  Drydocks World has implemented a waste minimization system that has reduced waste disposal to landfills significantly, with 85% of the yards total waste recycled. Under this waste minimization system several initiatives have been invoked to hinder adverse environmental impact. Drydocks World now uses static frequency converters, which emit zero NOX, SO2 or CO2 and are 50%more economical than generators. As a leader in the offshore sector, Drydocks World values the preservation of marine ecosystems and has developed a filtration system to minimize the impact of waste water discharge to the environment. The waste water treatment facility has been designed to treat all industrial waste, recycling water and oil through an in-house filtration system installed in all the graving dock trenches. The total oil recycled through the waste water treatment plant has amounted to an impressive 28,000 tons approximately. Drydocks World has further incorporated Chariot Robotics into the yards operations to reduce pollution and increase productivity. This hydro-blasting method on a vessel’s hull emits zero toxins to the environment and the eco-friendly enclosed blasting and painting sheds with dust and fumes extraction systems minimize air emissions through a grit recycling system that is capable of using 100% recycled steel grit. In addition to minimizing emission levels, Drydocks World has improved energy efficiency through the installation of eco-friendly LED lights in the yard. The LED lights have led to electricity savings of nearly 7 million kilowatts annually and to energy cost savings of approximately 3 million AED per year.

There is no doubt that Drydocks World and Maritime World realize the huge responsibility upon themselves to the environment, people, society and the marine industry, and will complete their implementation by carrying on with the green policy and they welcome the distinctive initiatives offered by its international partners and clients.
